220W computer to 110W outlet? Converter or adapter?
I bought a computer in Korea that uses 220W. Now I am going back to the US where they have 110W. Do I need a voltage converter or do i need an adapter? If a converter, is it a step up or step down? How many volts for a presario compaq laptop? Over 1600?
First, I am going to assume you meant 220V. Yes, you may use a voltage converter or adapter to run any virtually any appliance nearly everywhere in the world you find infrastructure with electricity. If the computer is a desktop (or tower) type model, you may simply need to replace the power supply unit. Upon arrival with your computer in the US, take it to a computer service business.
Most laptop computers sold in the US operate on approximately 19.5V. Most power supply modules will adapt to varying input voltages and frequencies. They were designed this way to enhance their portability and usefulness to business travelers. Check the power supply module for a tag with specifications. If you don't know how to interpret what it says on there, take the laptop and the power supply to a computer service business, and ask them for clarification.
The Compaq Presario power supply for whichever model you have can be purchased here: http://www.shopping.hp.com/can/notebook/notebook_hp/batteries/1/accessories
Good luck!
