Angle Telephoto Lens

Telephoto, zoom or wide-angle? Which lens would be best for a trip to Alaska? I'd like an all purpose lens.
I have a Canon EOS Rebel S II. I am taking a trip to Alaska soon and would like an additional lens for the trip. I would like a lens that will serve best for all around use...distance landscape shots, but also for closer wildlife shots too.
I've read about focal lengths, etc but would just like to hear the answer in laymans terms.
Any and all help/info is greatly appreciated.
For 35mm film, a 28-200mm represents a good single lens compromise covering wide-angle to moderate telephoto ranges. What it will not give you is the telephoto range for smaller animals and birds. You will need something that gives you up to 300mm for that. Consider a 70-300mm zoom or a x2 teleconverter.
I used a Tamron 28-200mm on a manual focus Nikon body to southern Africa last year, and found it just that a little short at 200mm. I was also carrying a compact digital with a 28-280mm film equivalent lens, and I got reasonable shots at the longer distances with it set at 280mm. I would have liked a bit more, but it was still better than the 200mm on my film camera.
