Can you hook up a firewire harddrive into the canon XHA1 to record?
I know you can buy battery powered hard drives to do this(http://www.amazon.com/Canon-FireStore-FSC-HD60-Portable-Camcorders/dp/B000R4VO0E)
Can I do this with a normal Firewire hard drive (without battery power) for studio shooting (I know you can do this with a computer, hook it up to a computer)
No, a regular "dumb" external hard drive made to work with computers that happens to have a firewire port will not work.
You have found the Focus Enhancements FireStore series. Sony makes one, too. There are expensive because there is a LOT of work/effort/design skill that went into designing the firmware that takes that DV or HDV information from the camcorder's DV port and writes it to the external hard drive - without a real computer between them.
