My camcorder is not working anymore. Help!!?
I have a Sharp ViewCam (the mini ones). Got it in 2003 for our honeymoon. Used it once more after that. Well we havent used it since then. I took it out the other day to use on an upcoming trip. Well it wouldnt turn on. So I thought maybe something was wrong with the battery. So we got a new battery. Still it wouldn't come on. Then we thought maybe it was the charger, so we got a new charger. It is STILL not working. It is only 3 yrs old and was only used twice. I can't think of why it wouldn't be working. Is there anyone that knows alot of camcorders that can tell me what may be the problem ( I know its kind of hard not looking at it so im just looking for a suggestion as to what it could be) and about how much it costs for a problem like this to be fixed.
Thanks!
If it won't turn on at all, and hasn't been abused (dropped, left out in the rain, etc.), then it is probably a fairly simple problem. Unfortunately, it probably won't be something you can fix.
Have you looked at the battery contacts inside the camera? Are they still bright and shiny? Sometimes, batteries left in a piece of equipment for a long time will leak and cause corrosion on the battery contacts. The corrosion could be really bad (grainy looking stuff), or you could have some oxidation (more like a light black film) on the contacts that is preventing the power in the battery from getting into the camera. You can clean this corrosion/oxidation yourself if you are careful. Simple oxidation can be rubbed off with a rubber pencil eraser, the grainy corrosion stuff may require an emery board or something similar. That is the first thing I would check.
Next, can the store that sold you the battery/charger verify that your battery (either new or old one) is actually charged up? If the charger is the kind that plugs into your camera, just install the battery and plug in the charger and wait for 12-24 hours (or however long it takes to charge the battery). Then remove the battery and take it to the store and have them check it (possibly by plugging the battery into another camera that takes the same kind of battery and seeing if it works). If they can't, you might just be able to take the "charged" battery to Radio Shack and have someone there measure the battery voltage for you. If the voltage is correct, at least you'll know the problem isn't the battery or charger itself. If the battery (especially the new one charged with the new charger) has low voltage or is dead, the problem is likely in the camera somewhere between where the charger plugs in and the battery contacts. At this point though, you are talking about having someone disassemble the camera and troubleshoot it. What did you pay for the camera, and what would a similar one cost today? Repairing electronics is often not cost effective as cheap as the new stuff is. I would look up the phone number for Sharp's Customer Service/Repair Center and give them a call and ask for a rough estimate of what repairing your camera might cost. Even a "simple" repair could be $75-$200 (or even more). You'll have to decide if it's worth spending as much as they say. Looking around on the web, apparently there are a lot of unhappy Sharp camera owners.
