Prosumer Camcorder Advise…?
Hi All!
I’m in the market for a prosumer camcorder and narrowed it down to three. Of course, I’m open to suggestions, but if someone could offer some opinions on the ones I picked, that would be appreciated as well.
Right now looking at:
Panasonic AG-DVX100B
Sony DSR-PD170
Sony DCR-VX2100
Features that are of importance:
Great sound
Great in low-light situations
External microphone included or allows for external/wireless mic
Good Battery life
Automatic/Manual zoom
MiniDV
No HD
Willing to spend up to roughly $3500-4000

Looking to film small gigs, documentaries, shorts, etc.
All three on your list a good selections - though I would suggest keeping open to high definition. All miniDV tape based high definition cams can also capture in 4:3 and 16:9 standard definition.
The Sony HDR-FX1000 (and possibly an XLR adapter from juicedLink or BeachTek) and Canon XHA1 are worthy candidates. They might not include an external mic - but that is actually good and allows you to select something equivalent or better than what the camcorder manufacturer's force on you when included with the camcorder (like some of those shotguns or wireless from Sennheiser or Audio-Technica).
None of these camcorders comes with "good battery life" you will need to pony up for an optional high capacity battery (or two). Anton Bauer or from the camcorder manufacturer. You also may want to consider some lenses and filters... a tripod or other steadying device (monopod, SpiderBrace, crane, SteadyCam/Glidecam type setup, etc.) and a decent video light/battery pack (NRG Research or Bescor).
Since you didn't tell us what sort of stuff you'll be shooting it is tough to provide any additional feedback. B & H Photo and Adorama are good, reputable, sources.
