1994 Mustang gauge cluster issue...?
Ok, i have a 1994 gt mustang with 145k. I replaced the motor with a stock 5.0 from a 1991 fox body. All accesories (timing cover, upper intake alt. etc...and the engine harness) is off the 94. (new water pump/electric fan motor) The problem is the gauges are reading funny... alt. says its charging on the low side (N-O) of normal and sometimes dances around, the oil pressure is at the (L) of normal, and my temp gauge settles down somewhere between (A-L) most of the time. On the highway, the temp gauge sometimes settles at the (R), stop and go traffic makes the gauge say its heating up... I think its the gauges, the sensors and sending units were swapped from old motor, where they worked fine...Could this be a grounding problem? the timing cover was also switched over, nothings leaking...Trying to give all the info i can because i am out of ideas...New water pump, elec fan, thermostat, and radiator cap. Any ideas? thanks..
I haven't worked on a '94 but it sounds like a ground problem to me. Where does the battery ground go? To the engine or the chassis? I'd guess it's to the engine since the engine starts and runs. But there should be a ground connection from the engine to the chassis so the gauge sending units and the gauge cluster both see the same ground. Most generally that ground was at the rear of the engine to the firewall. I've seen guys miss it when they were replacing an engine.
