Camera Flash Diffuser

What's a good begginer flash sync device?
I am an amateur photographer student with little experience and little money. I use a canon a-1 35mm and canon t2i dslr. I am looking to start purchasing basic entry level lighting equipment for a home studio. More specifically I would like to find something cheap that can sync older flashes to my dslr. The flashes are canon speed lite 155a and another one that is older and smaller. I have been looking at sync cords but I dont think those will fit into my new camera nor do i think you can use two at a time. Is it silly to even bother with these old flashes? Or should I save my energy and money for something down the line? The flashes seem powerful enough even with a diffuser so I don't know.
Any suggestions would be awesome
thanks
Sam
For a studio, I am very skeptical about the capabilities of the 155A. It only has a Guide Number of 50 ft. The 580 exII, Canon's flagship flash, in comparison, has a GN of 190ft. So, that's definitely not a lot of power.
There are multiple way to sync your flashes. I use the Cactus V4. They are wireless and cheap (Transceiver+receiver=$65, additional receiver=$45). Some pros will tell you that they are not reliable (I never had any problem with mines), but I am definitely not a pro, and ditching $150 or more for the luxurious Pocket Wizard is just above my budget.

If you can set it to manual and have a PC port they can be really helpful.
My advice?
First, read the Stobist blog and join the strobist group on Flickr. Then, thoroughly read, re-read and practice the assignments (L101 and L102). This will help you to lay a solid ground and master the terminology, understand how light work and take the most out of the equipment you already own. Only then, I would suggest to go for new acquisition
