Whats the Canon EOS 1000F SLR Camera like?
I am looking at buying a secondhand one with a Canon zoom lens 35-105mm and a Cosina 28-300mm lens?
Are they any good?
Were in their day, which was 1991. Wouldn't touch one now.
Film cameras are very cheap these days, go for an EOS 300(aka Rebel 2000, or Kiss III) 300v (rebel Ti, Kiss IV) or ideally the 300x (Rebel T2 or Kiss 7) if you want lightweight compact and inexpensive.
A few reasons why:
The 1000 has a very very basic AF system, the 300 to 300x have a much more up to date, friendly system.
The 1000 is of the age where it may have a gummy shutter, it will certainly have 10 years more use on it than the oldest 300s.
The 300s, particularly the 300x have a much better shutter design that isn't prone to gumming and capable of a faster top shutter speed and higher flash synch speed. You may not know what any of this means but it is better.
The 300s take easier to find, less expensive CR2 batteries, the 1000 takes costly 2CR5 batteries.
The 300s have depth of field preview, essential for learners. the 1000 does not.
The 300s have the E-TTL (or E-TTL II on the 300x) flash metering, much more advanced and will work with canon EX speedlites.
A 300 will not cost you any more than a 1000, or at least very little more as all canon EOS film SLRs (apart from the 1v) go for silly cheap money.
The 300s are up to date enough to have improved technology, the 300x in particular is a belter for the money.
There are better EOS film cameras, such as the Elan 7s and the 3, but they all cost a bit more money and more complicated to work.
The only benefit of getting an EOS 1000 is that occassionally there is a very decent lens attached.
If you can get a good price on an EOS 1000 with either a 50mm f1.8 (not the mark II) or a 28-70 (mkII) on it then snap it up, dump the body and get an EOS 300 series.
