Canon Lens Hoods

Why are lens hoods so expensive ( Perki, Sam, Edwin, Pooky, Fhotoace, anyone )?
I was looking at some lens hoods, and they very expensive. Why is a little piece of plastic so expensive? The one i would need ( since Canon doesn't provide one ) is around $40, why?

It's bad enough Canon doesn't provide one for a 450 dollar lens, but making you pay $40 for a piece of plastic is adding insult to injury
They really vary in price ... the replacement for my 24-85 mm is under $15, yet the replacement for my 400 mm f/2.8 is over $550.
I am sure it has to do with the frequency customers have to replace their lens shades, due to damage or loss. I am constantly (not that often, about four times in six years) replacing the $15 lens hood since I use it more than most of my other lenses, so is subject to more opportunities of being scrunched.
If you need a lens shade, you need a lens shade, so while $40 seems like a lot of money, there seems to be now way round it ... just spend the money or not
