Cap Nikon Digital

Can anyone help me work out how to use this digital SLR?
I borrowed a friend's Nikon digital SLR and I've never used one before... I have no idea how to set the f-stop or shutter speed. For example, to put it on preference (so that I manually enter shutter speed but it works out aperture), which setting on the little wheel do I turn it to? There's ones that say M,A,S, P, a macro, one of like a kid with a cap on (don't know what that's for) etc. There's also a switch on the lens which says M, A, which I assume is automatic or manual. Can anyone help? I just need the basics of how to change the settings, cos I have no idea what each of the buttons does! Thanks
Think the model's D40 if that helps
While it hurts me to say this, the easiest thing you can do is put the camera in auto. The camera will make all of the decisions for your and is piratically like using a point and shoot camera
The next step would be P. Here you can make some adjustments, and you control the flash. This would be better than auto and give you some basic control (you can decide if you want more or less depth of field, the camera will adjust everything else...etc)
Generally I shoot in A. This gives you Aperture priority and is easy to use. If you want to open the fstop, twist the dial in lower the fstop. To close it, do the reverse. This lets you decide how much blur (depth of field) you want in your photo, and lets you decide in low light if depth of field, or quick shutter, is most important to you.
S does the same as A, but now you control the shutter speed and the camera automatically sets the f stop.
In M you control both. This is mostly for advanced shooters as you need to make the decision on shutter and aperture yourself, both at the same time.
Also if you get a chance look up ISO. On a D40 you can take photos up to ISO 800 without having to much digital noise, but after that the photos will be nearly useless. Try to stay below ISO 400 for the cleanest photos.
If you use any of the settings with the pictures on it, then the camera will make all the decisions for you. And yes the M and A on the lens are for Manuel focus or Automatic focus.
