What can a UK collection agency legally do to me in Canada?
Background: My wife and I moved back to Canada after living in the UK for three years in Sept '05. We still had some debt owing on our HSBC credit cards, but left a balance in our accounts to cover minimum payments until we were able to secure a loan to pay them off. Well, my wife's account ran out of money before we could get a loan, and without any notification HSBC shut the credit card account and turned it over to a collection agency, named Wescot Credit Services.
I have called and spoken with them, only to be bullied and threatened with legal action if we didn't repay the entire balance immediately. My question is: what legal action can they take if I'm in Canada? I've read that our Canadian credit rating won't be affected, but can they send agents beating down our door? thanks for the responses.
I know one person who left the UK owing various companies money. One of them found out she was in Florida and they sold the debt to a Florida Debt Recovery Agency and they contacted her giving her 30 days to pay the entire amount or face legal action. This may be a possibility that could happen to you
