However, to answer your question, Carl Zeiss is the name of the guy who formed the company in Germany (that was a long time ago). ( http://www.ziess.de )
Vario Tessar is the name of a lens. The German lens makers often give their lens a "name". Leitz (now Leica) does the same too. That one sounds like a zoom lens.
(Most of the ) Zeiss lenses on Sony camera are made in Japan. Someone said on this board that Zeiss whores their name to Sony. Same can be said for Leica on their Panasonic stuff. Supposed to be made the same way their factories in Germany.
