Circular Polarizer Camera

Best SLR camera general-use filter?
Right now I'm using a Nikon N55 with 28-80 lens. Due to using my dad's Chinon CE-6 manual focus before it, I bought a polarizing filter (circular polarizer) for mine, because that's just what I was used to having on the lens.
Would a UV filter be better for overall general-use shooting?
Mostly outdoors, variable light, nature/cemetary/wildlife/architecture type shooting? Maybe a few portraits here and there... Probably 200 or 400 speed film, more likely 200.
You have to learn when not to use polarizing filters. Sometimes cutting off the reflections from water bodies or too much darkening of the sky can take the overall effect of the photograph away. Use polarizing filter only when you know what you want to achieve.
Since you intend to shoot in variable light and sometimes your shooting will include wildlife at close distances (going by your focal length), you would want more light to enter your camera. Polarizers reduce the amount of light by 1-3 stops depending on the make. In such cases too you'll be better off without the polarizer.
I prefer using inexpensive lenses without any filter in the usual conditions. Every glass element in front of the lens tends to reduce the picture quality. In expensive lenses, while shooting in dusty conditions or where there are chances of front element getting dirty, I use Hoya 'HD' UV filters now. They are clear and most of all give better protection than most other UV filters.
