It would help us a great deal if you'd include in your question where you get your TV channels from, i.e. cable, antenna, etc. It could also make a big difference if you're not in the U.S.

You mention "snow," which is a phenomenon seen only on analog channels. So if you're in the U.S., my guess is you're connected to basic cable (no cable box).

The fact that you're seeing "snow" is troubling. It's true, as the other answers indicate, that an analog signal on an HDTV won't look quite as good as your old analog TV. (HDTV sets are not designed for analog.) But you still shouldn't be seeing snow, just a slightly indistinct analog picture.

Snow indicates a very weak incoming signal. On basic cable, that means something is wrong somewhere with the cabling, a connector, or even with your subscription with the cable company. And you should not need a line amplifier unless you're feeding many different TVs in your house through a multi-port splitter, maybe 4 to 6 or more.

So, you've bought a new HDTV. You should consider springing for a proper digital cable box and a subscription to one of the company's digital channel packages. Otherwise, you're going to be stuck with unsatisfactory images, even if you fix your weak signal problem.
