Using the ColorRight White Balance?
I shoot a lot of dirt cars on race tracks at night. Lighting is very minimal at most tracks. Last week I bought and used the ColorRight White Balance filter.
Usually at the track I am zooming in and out for different pictures. It changes from picture to picture. So here's what happen. On close up pictures, lens at 25 to 35mm, the picture and color are great. But when I take a shoot of something, usually a car moving on the track, the picture has a blueish gray tint. The lens would usually be zoomed out to 100 mm.
I am using a canon, with 580 EXII flash.
I am wondering if when I took the picture to be used on the custom white balance, I must have had the camera lens on or about at 35 mm.
Is it necessary to take a new white balance shoot for distance shoots and one for close ups.
If so this filter isn't going to work very good at the track.
What do you think?
I shoot NHRA night drags.
I use the High Temp. Mercury Vapor setting on my camera (not using flash) and fine tune it using the Amber to Blue and Green to Magenta tool, using a white card as my constant. I usually shoot at 1600 to 6400 ISO and if necessary use Noise Ninja to reduce image noise.
When I do use an external flash, I shoot with the white balance set to flash. All those shots are done within 60 feet and at ISO 800 or less
I will assume you are using the HDmini ColorRight filter since you are not shooting "skin". Due to the different lighting (flash and ambiant) you will have to store two custom white balance settings on your camera, one for flash and one for the track
