Digital Lens Set

If I can't afford another lens for my camera, should I invest in an extension tube set?
I recently purchased a canon digital rebel xt, and I current own a sigma 70-300 and sigma 28-80 lens. I would like to be able to zoom in closer to objects, and I read in a photography book that extension tubes can many times help your focal length lens focus closer to objects. I cannot afford $350 for a new lens, and I would really just like to improve the power of the 70-300 lens. Would an extension tube be the route to go? And would it work with the sigma lens?
Dude, what do you shoot, that a 300mm lens * a 1.6 crop factor is not long enough?! He he. Well, with a tele converter you can add another magnification factor of 1.4 to 2.0. (They come in different kinds.) And you're right - they're a cheap way to get that extra reach.
They have a few down sides though. For one thing, they mess with your image quality... which is not fantastic with the Sigma 70-300 to begin with. The bigger the magnification factor of the tele converter, the more it degrades your image quality. Also, with a tele converter, your lens becomes a bit slower. The Sigma 70-300 is F5.6 at the long end and with a TC that will become F8 to F11. This means that for moving subjects, you can only use it on sunny days. And finally, with some tele converters, the auto focus won't work. Not that THAT would be a real problem; you can always set the focus (to infinity) manually.
So with a 2x tele converter, you'd have an effective reach of the 300mm Sigma * a 2.0 TC * the 1.6 crop factor = 960mm. Oh, snap!! You'd better get one helluva tripod, too
