What is the best equipment for Macro Photography?
I own an Nikon D70 camera, and i've been trying to do some Macro shooting. I've looked around on the internet for what i should get to shoot some real macro, and i get alot about teleconverters, extension tubes an macro lenses, with very little limit on price, what is the best thing to buy for Macro?
I already own Tamron Macro 200mm, 70-300mm and 80-180mm lens
I am giving you a basic guideline based on the image quality you should expect, with the first being the better quality possible:
The best would be a dedicated macro lens, like tamron 90mm macro, but also this is the most expensive option.
The second best think would be an extension tube on a short lens, like the wide end of your 70-300mm. An extension tube of length L gives magnification of F/L when focused at infinity, where F is the lens' focal length, so the shorter the lens the better. No image quality loss, although most lenses are optimized for near infinity focus, so expect more distortion or aberrations. An ideal lens would be the very cheap Nikon 50mm 1.8 with two 24.5mm extension tubes. Expect much more than 1:1 with this combination.
The third best option would be a macro filter, in which case the magnification becomes the ratio of the focal lengths of the lens and the filter and works better for longer lenses. Loss of quality due to the glass in front of the lens. Prefer multicoated doublets (that consist of two elements so as to minimize aberrations).
The fourth option is a teleconverter. A 2x for example doubles the magnification and leaves the working distance the same, which is very good for living creatures that could go away if you get too close. More quality loss, think of it as magnifying the imperfections of your lens, although you can expect great results with a pro lens and compatible teleconverter, none of which is in your list (read Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 or similar, or a prime).
Another option would be a reversing ring, that is, a special attachment that allows you to mount the lens on its reverse and acchieve much more than 1:1 magnification, but in the cost of very shallow depth of field.
A final option for extreme macro is to reverse mount a short lens an a longer one and have a mgnification of F1/F2.
