Extension Tube Ring

photography: what makes me go as close as 1/4 inch from my subject? an extension tube or a reversing ring?
Both, depending on the lens you use. In fact there are several ways to achive this.
1. With an actual macro lens. However the longer focal lenth lens wil not get as close as a shorter focal lenth lens.
2. A reversing ring. Same rule as above. The wider angle lenses will allow you to focus closer with greater magnification.
3. A coupling ring/adapter. This will allow you to mount a 2nd lens backward in fromt of your primary lens. In this type of set-up the wide angle lense should be the one mounted backward. And again, the wider the reversed lens this closer the focus range.
4. Extension tubes. These are rings which will mount between your lens and camera body. The longer the tube the greater the magnification and shorter the focusing distance. Same rule as the others, wider angle lens will give greater magnification and shoert focusing range. But you can one extend the lens so far until it is impossible to focus. This in becuase the focusing distance will actually be inside the lens body.
5. Bellows. This is mounted like extension tubes. But allow greater control as you can adjust the distance of extension. Same rules aplly as on the extension tubes. I was able to achieve to focusing distacnce of 1/4 inch as you are trying to achieve with this method. I use a 28mm lens with bellows extended to 70mm. I have the results of a extension experament at the following link.

6.Close up filters. Also called close up lenses. They are basically mgnifying lenses which swcrew on in front of your lens. The quality isn't as good as the other methods but will allow closer focusing. You may have to stack several to get extremely close. Each filter will distort the image a little more each time.
