wide angle lens for my Sony DSC-HX1?!?
i've been looking around a bit for a wide angle (fish eye with black rounded corners) lens for my sony camera DSC-HX1 and i haven't found the right thing yet. do you have any idea on what websites/stores would have one of these? pleaseandthankyou
With the cost of dSLR cameras dropping so much in the past ten years, the need for add-on lenses for P&S cameras has become nearly none-existent.

As you can see, there are NO add-on lenses available for the Sony HX1, nor is there an adapter for such a lens.
In 2000, the introduction of cameras like the $1,000 Coolpix 990 (3x optical zoom) with a decent size sensor (7.18 x 5.32 mm) and four different add-on lenses, made this P&S a great alternative to the costly Nikon D1 (nearly $6,000), especially when the end result was to be a point of purchase piece that was not much larger than a 5x7 inch card.
The rest of this is history of fisheye lenses.
In the following ten years, P&S cameras like the Sony HX1 with an a amazing 20x optical zoom, the need for a real fisheye lens (180 degree coverage) has dimmed. The cost to design and build such a lens far exceeds what a camera company can expect to recapture in sales, even over an extended time.
Since the introduction of 35 mm cameras, there have only been a hand full of full 180 degree, fisheye lenses even made. Fisheye lenses were first used as a scientific tool. Nikon was conspicuous in that they made quite a few of them, starting with the amazing Nikkor 6mm f/2.8 (220 degree coverage) which dwarfed a professional 35 mm camera to 7.5 mm, 8 mm and 10 mm fisheye lenses including the the FC-E8 fisheye add-on lens for the Coolpix 900 series cameras and the relatively new 16 mm full frame fisheye (circa 1990's) and current 10.5 mm DX lens.
I do not know about any of the fisheye lenses made by Pentax, Minolta or Canon over the years, but I am sure that using Yahoo Search you will be able to find some of the history of those companies lenses.
What you have seen is a fascination of using the fisheye as a creative tool which has opened the door to those not so honest optics makers start to make and call uncorrected wide angle add-on lenses something like fisheye/wide angle/ macro lens for (you name your camera) for the cost of less than a good UV filter. People fall for this time and time again. It must be too good a "deal" to pass up.
Recently, we have seen some of the generic lens makers introducing 180 degree fisheyes that can be used in 35 mm and dSLR cameras, most notably, the Sigma 8 mm, 10 mm and 15 mm fisheyes as well as a Vivitar 7 mm, Bower 8 mm.
Maybe in time, someone will produce a generic add-on fisheye lens for those P&S cameras that have the ability to accept axillary lenses
