What lens/filter types would you recommend for a Canon Rebell XSi 12.2MP?

I just take pictures for fun, nothing professional. I want a lens that will take pictures outside very well as well as inside. The problem with the digital camera (Canon Powershot SD900) we have now is that a lot of the pictures are turning out blurry and we're tired of it. From what I understand, a SLR like this one will eliminate this lag time from taking pictures.
I would like suggestions for both lenses as well as some sort of UV filter (and other filters)

Get the nifty fifty canon EF 50mm f1.8 II lens.
Cheap, sharp and good in low light. Also learn how to use a higher ISO to help indoors.
