Filter Lens Kit

Does anyone bought the Sigma 17-70mm lens as an upgrade to the Rebel 350D kit lens?
If so, is it worth the upgrade? Is the photo quality considerably better?
*Warning, dumb question*: I was reading reviews that said that one downside to the lens is that it has an expensive filter of 72mm. What exactly does that mean? Clearly, I'm new to photography.
this is a wide angle zoom lens. i feel 17mm is too extreme (almost a fisheye lens), you are likely to obtain nasty distortions at this focal length, including vignetting no doubt (dark areas at the periphery of the shot). I recently bought the sigma 24-70mm ex dg macro, it provides a good focal range, good wide angle and the ex range has superior optics. if u still want extreme wide angle shots, i would invest in a prime (no zoom) lens of about 20mm, u should get less distortion.
Finally, the lens diameter of the sigma 17-70 is 72mm, which is also the lens filter size u will need. I STRONGLY recommend u purchase at least a uv filter to protect the external lens optic. filters just screw on to the end of the lens, and it is safer AND CHEAPER to have to clean the filter rather than the lens. I just paid £60 for a 82mm filter for my sigma 24-70mm ex dg macro, money well spent i think.
