what is a macro lens?
i have a stock kit (lens) i want to go macro so i can do close up work. a whole new marco lens cost alot but ive been saving up for it. my friend said i can just use a lens converter, a device you place on your camera mount then you attach the lens there and it becomes macro just like that. another friend told me i can uses a close up filter and my lens will become macro... so what should i do? whats the advantage of buying a new macro lens?
Yes, a true macro lens is expensive. A true macro lens has several advantages due to its design.
1) A true macro lens will give you a 1:1 (life size) image of your subject on your screen.
2) A true macro lens has a flat field of focus. Very useful when photographing stamps or paintings or documents.
3) A true macro lens is designed to give maximum center to edge sharpness.
4) A true macro lens is designed to have minimum light fall-off from center to edge.
5) A true macro lens is designed for close focusing without distortion.
Although its always nice to have a lens made by the camera manufacturer, don't ignore macro lenses from Tamron or Sigma or Tokina. You can read reviews of these lenses at:

I personally like the 90mm to 105mm focal length for a macro lens. A longer focal length gives a better working distance from bees and other skittish subjects. The longer focal length also makes using a macro ring flash easier.
While you are saving for your new macro lens, a set of extension tubes would be a good choice. I'm not a fan of "close-up" lenses on the front of the lens.
