What type of lens filter should I use (see details)?
I am new to photography and will be visiting the grand canyon and monument valley area. What's a good type of filter to use (type and brand)? I was thinking of getting a UV filter.
I just bought a Nikon D40 and have the kit lens (18-55mm) and also the 55-200mm VR lens.
Do I need to buy a filter for both lenses, or can I just switch them whenever I switch lenses? They take the same size filter. (I'm trying to save some money.)
A UV filter is an exceptionally good idea, if for no other reason than it helps protect the front lens element from damage. Otherwise, you typically won't see a signficant difference in the image with or without it.
Another option might be a polarizing filter. It consists of two pieces of treated glass that rotate across the front of your lens. When you are shooting at a 90 degree angle from your light source (typically the sun) and adjust the filter, it will dramatically deepen the blue skies and whiten the clouds. I've used them for very dramatic shots of the canyon.
Be sure to get out right around sunrise and sunset for some of the best lighting of the day.
