Filter Panasonic Lumix

I need a new DSLR camera with out the $1,000+ price tag. What do you recommend?
I love to take pictures!! I have been using Panasonic Lumix and just love them, however my last one the FZ-18 didn't last very long. The zoom button gets stuck and it doesn't always take the picture. I have filters and Tokina lenses that I got for it, but they really don't take a good picture. I don't know much about cameras and lenses, but know what I want out of a camera. My kids are in sports, so I need a good action camera and one that will take continuous pictures. I also need some help in low light not getting blurry subjects!! What can you tell me without sending me to photography school??
