how to i set the filter effect on my canon rebel xs?
See page 84 of your manual for setting filter effects. It's mostly for shooting in "monochrome".
There you will also find, how to set "toning" effects such as "sepia", blue, purple and green.
Page 82 discusses, setting other parameters, such as saturation, contrast, etc. which could be considered "filters" of sorts.
As Pooky said however, once you shoot using these settings, you're stuck, with what you've shot, and it might be better to use post processing.
Someone else, needs to read THEIR manual!
