2 Camera questions on Nikon slr.?
1. Does it matter if I put my polarizing filter over my UV/clear filter or do I have to remove my UV/clear filter every time I put on my polarizer?
2. If I have a weak fill flash for outdoor photos, should I set my white balance to sunny or flash?
Thanks for helping this fledgling photographer.
1. It depends on the focal length of the lens. If you are using a long lens (usually over 50mm), it doesn't matter. However, if you are using a wide lens (24mm and below), you may encounter some vignetting (darkening of the corners in the frame) of the field of view, caused by the filters being stacked. Any wider than 24mm, and you should probably not be using a polarizer anyway, because of the risk of banding. Most people use polarizers for two reasons, to eliminate glare from reflective objects, and to deepen skies and increase saturation and contrast. Having a lot of sky in the frame of a wide lens can cause banding because the polarizer only works at certain angles relative to the polarization -- which means you'll see bands across the field of view from one part of the sky being polarized to the other. This is an issue because wide lenses see so much of the sky. Otherwise, you can use both. If they are uncoated, cheap filters, you could get ghosting artifacts when shooting into the sun, so that you are aware.
2. There is no white balance preset that will handle the mixed color temperature of daylight and flash. The best thing to do is gel your flash head with a 1/4 CTO (color temperature orange) filter. That will change the color of the light that comes from the flash.
