how to enrich my betta's life?
i just feel like my betta isn't getting the most out of life. she's currently laying on the bottom of the bowl, doing...fish things, i really have no idea. i have a plastic plant in the tank, and i'm working on growing betta bulbs in a separate cup, just in case something goes horribly wrong. those (if they grow properly) i'm planning on putting in the bowl in about three weeks. meanwhile, what can i do for my betta without busting my wallet? and i have a very small/average bowl size with no filter, in case that matters.
*my betta is also a girl
10 points for BA! (or badazz-ness, which ever you prefer)
If you really want your betta to thrive, she's going to need a new home. Bowls just aren't a suitable habitat for any fish, one major problem is that you can't properly heat and filter them. Another problem is the lack of space for your betta to swim around and explore. She's probably laying at the bottom of the bowl because she doesn't have enough room to do anything except swim in a circle.
I think the best thing you can do for your girl is get her a 5 gallon tank with a heater (set between 78-82 degrees) and a low flow filter. A really good thing about a 5 gallon tank, aside from your betta having more room to swim, is that you'll have more room to add caves, decorations and live or silk plants for your betta to explore. You would be amazed at how curious and smart bettas are when they have a stimulating environment.
You don't have to spend a ton of money to get a decent tank. Craigslist is a great place to find tanks and tank accessories for really cheap. If you prefer something brand new, Wal-Mart has a 5 gallon tank kit that comes with the glass tank, hood and filter for less than $30. All you would have to get is a heater which you can get for less than $20 at Petsmart or Petco.
As for those betta bulbs, from what I've heard form other betta owners, they pretty much don't work. But you could get lucky so it's worth a shot. It was a really good idea to try and grow them in a separate cup first, they way if they die, they won't pollute your water. If you wanted some nice looking, low maintenance live plants you could try java moss, java fern, annubias nana or a marimo moss ball. They're all great beginner plants and your betta will absolutely LOVE them. Live plants also help to improve the water quality in your tank as well...so it's a win, win situation.
I hope this was helpful to you and I really think you should try to get your girl a tank, you'll notice a world of difference in her.
Also, here's a link to the 5 gallon kit I was talking about. It says $32 online but it's actually a few bucks cheaper in the store:

Good luck!
