Fisheye Wide Lens

Wide lens used for fisheye effect?
I got a canon 400d for christmas and it also came with multiple lenses. One of which is a 58MM 0.45X Digital wide lens with macro. (this is what it says on the lens)
I thought that wide lenses were the same as fisheye? That they give the same effect? I'm not sure if I'm not doing something right with the lens but it definetely widens the photo but doesn't give it that distorted look.
I looked on ebay for a fish eye lens which I ended up finding a "0.42X wide angle lens" which with their sample photos looked like fisheye..But I'm not getting the same effect with essentially the same lens. I'd really like to figure this out so anyone care to explain?! =)
Thanks!
The numbers on these auxiliary lenses represent the factor by which they reduce the focal length of the lens they are attached to. So .45x on a zoom at 18mm gives you a focal length 8.1mm. The difference between a fisheye lens and a wide angle lens is the type of distortion. A normal wide angle lens is corrected so that straight lines remain straight all across the frame. This requires an increase in magnification towards the edges. Fisheye lenses have neutral or negative magnification changes towards the edges, resulting in pronounced barrel distortion. Fisheye lenses are all wide-angle, because the effect is negligible at long focal lengths. However, you can have a normal wide-angle lens of the same focal length, though at very short FLs it becomes difficult to cover the full frame. You're not doing anything wrong; your .45x lens is a normal wide angle lens, not a fisheye.
Edit: The 58mm specification on that lens is the size of the filter thread it screws into, not its focal length. It's an auxiliary lens that attaches to the front of another lens, changing its focal length by .45 times.
