Canon Speedlite on a Nikon D5000?
So I just bought a Nikon D5000, and my dad has a old Canon Speedlite Flash Kit that he got in the '80s. It fits in the housing and all. I tried it out and it works perfect. It has a bit of sound when it's turned on (assuming that the sound means it's working). My main concern is even though it fits in the housing, it might be a converting a different amount of voltage causing the camera later on too break. Does anyone know if it's fine using it or any way I can check if it's ok. Thanks!
There won't be any issues using the flash - meaning it won't harm your camera. The only concern is that the connecters are not the same, and therefore the flash/camera will not communicate information allowing for the camera to properly adjust flash output for the scene. So, you'll have to manually adjust the flash for the output needed. The only flashes that will allow this are the ones listed in your camera manual, or Nikonusa.com, such as the SB-600/800/900, and some are also available from Sigma and other mfg's.
So, if you don't mind playing around to determine the proper flash settings, you'll be fine.
