Wedding photography - kit?
Hey there, i did photography at university and have a sound working knowledge of it. However, someone has offered me a large sum of money to do their wedding photos. I have a nikon d80 and large sturdy tripod. I was considering purchasing a second hand metz flash(hammerhead style) and a sync lead, and shutter release cable. The main idea for this was that when taking the photos, i will have a better light source for the shots with a fair few people in, also i have a long strechy hot shoe adapter so i hold the flash at an angle other that straight from the camera. I just wanted to check that this would be the right equipment to use for the job? Any information is welcomed no matter how irrelevant. Many thanks for your time ![]()
Yeh, i only wanted to take the tripod for taking the shots of groups of people, like the bridesmaids and other group portraits. The metz flash was also part of my thinking towards this, as i didnt think the built in flash on the d80 would cut it?
The Metz "potato masher" flash guns were the staple of wedding photographers up until the digital revolution. Now we all want Nikon's CLS or Canon's eTTL.
I'd say there's nothing wrong with the Metz and your D80. I've shot events with my D70s and a Sunpak 555 (although I've now migrated to the D300 and SB-800 and 900).
I suggest shooting RAW ("Raw Rules!") to give you the greatest flexibility in curves adjustments, and watch your histogram for blown highlights (turn on the "blinky" review mode).
You didn't mention lenses. Most will recommend "fast glass" to use narrow depth of field to isolate the subject against the surroundings. Also beware of the 13-D church (dark, dull, dreary...) with the no-flash rules. The D80 has pretty good high ISO capability, but you'll want really fast glass - the 50/1.8 is good, the 1.4 better in low light, and you might find the 85/1.8 or 1.4 necessary for the added reach (if they won't let you use flash, good chance they won't want you climbing around the alter, either).
The 24-70/2.8 was mentioned, but 24mm might not be wide enough for the group shots. The 17-55/2.8 is also a very popular lens for wedding pros. You may want to rent these lenses before sinking a lot of money into lenses.
