Flash Diffuser Cover

I think i need a better flash. What should i get?
I have a Bower auto focus SFD728C, digital TTL Flash (exactly what it says on the unit). I use a Canon 50D. Ive been shooting alot of shows (concerts whatever you want to call them) with low light settings. I have been having troubles with the flash and i think i can eliminate if i just get a better one. Mine seems very basic. Any suggestions? I also do all types of photography such as portraits and nature shots and sports. So whatever is good for all of those things would help. Also money is a problem so if your going to suggest something thats really really expensive dont. (also would like info on diffusers and whatnot- the white covers that go over the flash unit)
Most venues don't allow flash, or cameras for that matter. What I use is a large 70 - 200mm f2.8. Most artists are well lit if you get rid of the off stage darkness by zooming in, for the most part it's a normal shot, the wide aperture helps to keep your shutter speed within the hand held range.
For portraiture check out this site which uses cheap manual flash off camera,
