Flash Diffuser Digital

Does putting a mirror in front of a camera's flash ruin the camera?
I learned about this tip and it has made my pictures look really nice! I guess it's like a diffuser but I was wondering if this will ruin my camera. Every time I try this trick my camera takes a bit longer to load for the next picture then when I just take pictures normally. I've tried it a couple of times with the same results. I have a simple point and shoot digital camera, the Canon Powershot A590 IS. Any help will be great! Thanks in advance.
Nope, won't hurt your camera a bit, but you may get through batteries a bit quicker this way.
When you put mirror in front of the flash, you are not diffusing the light, you are bouncing it. You didn't say how you put it, but I'm guessing you put it slightly below the flash and pointing at 45 degrees upward, so that flash light is reflected into the ceiling. Or you are putting it right in front so that it's redirected into your forehead or the wall behind.
This is called bouncing. What happens is the light hits, let's say ceiling, then some part of it reflects from it and shines at your subject illuminating it as if the light source was up there. The bigger external flashes professionals use often can be turned up without mirrors for the same effect.
However, when you do it, the drawback is that you need a lot more light to illuminate the subject that way. The light has to travel much further, plus, unless you have a mirror up on the ceiling some of it is not bounced back. So the flash goes off with much more power than if it shot straight into subjects face. So after each shots it needs to get more juice from the batteries and into its capacitors before it's ready to fire again. That's why you see the longer delay.
Somebody suggested a piece of white paper in front of a flash - that would be diffusing, rather than bouncing. The light will be coming straight up, but it will be much softer and pleasing. It may get your flash recharging a bit quicker, but still longer than without anything in front of it. It's also a good technique, though from personal experience I find that if a good bounce surface is available (either ceiling or a wall), bouncing gives a better overall result. I use one of those big flashes that tilts and swivels though, so it's a bit easier for me to aim the bounce head precisely.
