Sony DSLR Alpha 300 Strobe Light Compatibility Issue?
I am using Sony Alpha DSLR 300. To use the strobe lights, I bought the adapter for Sony A-300. When I connect the Strobe light with my Sony Camera, strobe flash starts flashing without even pressing the camera flash button. I asked the Sony, they said I need to buy the FA-ST1AM since the generic PC Sync adapters does not control the voltage stabilizer built-in. It cost $179.99. Any suggestion.

I just got my adapter recently and I will testify that it worked perfectly with my $12 (another ebay find) Vivitar 550FD flash on my A100. You will be limited in your flash shots, but you also won't need to spend $250-$400 for a Sony flash unit.
I set the 550FD to ISO 200 and set my A100 to manual exposure mode, ISO 200, f/5.6 1/125sec or slower. 1/200 or 1/160 may also work but I only know that 1/250 gave me about 80% of the screen. The flash lights up the room to well over 20 feet, much better than the anemic built in flash.
When the Vivitar is in "A" mode, the built in sensor on the flash unit acts like the TTL on the camera and shuts off the flash when it gets enough light so close ups and far shots are properly lit.
I tried this unit on my Vivitar 283 which puts 300V on the hot shoe and the adapter DID regulate the voltage down to 6V which is safe for my A100. The 550FD already puts only 6V on the hot shoe so that was no problem. I made sure the adapter had a voltage regulator on it for this purpose.
The hot shoe adapter cost me $7.99 with free shipping and took 9 days to get to me from Hong Kong. I see now that the vendor is charging an extra $5 for shipping, but IMO it is still worth it. FWIW this flash adapter also has a PC sync cord socket.
You can also find Sony/Minolta compatible TTL flashes on ebay for $50-$120 and some of them have the focus assist IR light on them too, but I cannot vouch for them.
I would love to be able to afford the big Sony flash units, but I am very happy with this little adapter and it expands my flash capabilities with my A100 with a very small additional outlay of cash.
