Flash Trigger Canon

2 questions about flashes for Canon EOS Rebel XTi(400D)?
Hi, I wanted to know two things...
1. What would be a good, but cheap, external flash I could get for my Canon 400D?
And...
2. How would I be able to work my way into having a remote-triggered flash? Like what supplies would I need, besides an external flash, a tripod, and the remote?
Thanks in advance!
Another place to look for off camera flash information is http://www.strobist.com
A dedicated flash, like the Metz mentioned, or a Canon 580EX or 430EX, has a lot of advantages in that the camera and flash are communicating and adjusting as light conditions change. Using the ST-E2 allows you to have that dedication but off camera. The ST-E2 is not cheap, though.
Another way to use off camera flash is to use flashes that have the ability to have their output level set manually. The Vivitar 385 and the Sunpak 383 are older flashes that get used extensively for this type of work. To trigger them, you need a non-dedicated wireless setup. Pocket Wizards are about the best at this but really expensive. More inexpensive (& less reliable) wireless setups are available from a place like Gadget Infinity (Cactus brand). Setting your own power level is similar to the way a studio lighting setup works. A flash meter is handy in this situation, but trial and error works, too. Check the Strobist site.
