CAMCORDER FOOTAGE - FURTHER QUESTION ABOUT DOWNLOADING OTHER THAN ONTO DVD?
I am wanting to save all my camcorder footage. I have already saved to DVD but would like a backup copy, only on a smaller storage medium. ie SD memory card or similar. My camcorder is the new release from Sony - Handycam DCR-SX30E. I have found that after burning to DVD should I wish to add to the DVD (using DVD-RW) then it will not let me add further footage without erasing what is already on the DVD. I am therefore having to save up enough footage to do at one go otherwise I am having to use loads of DVD's and although cheap enough I would rather have my footage all on one DVD. As I am saving as much footage as I can on my laptop it would help if I could save it instead on some other medium as mentioned above, so that I can free up my laptop memory. Any ideas what to backup onto other than a HDD external drive? I am then wanting to save this for future posterity, just in case something should happen to any of my DVD footage. Further to your question, the safest option is again a external HDD, if you leave a sd card for long enough the data stored on it will no longer be there, you if you do choose this medium then you are going to need to plug it into your computer frome time to time. to keep the stored data on it. there is a chance at that point when you plug your data card in you can loose the data anyway, so it is not as safe as you think it is. USB memory devices were never designed for long term secure back up Leaving it in a box for many months most of the makers say that they will hold data for up to 10 years, not that it will hold data for ten years only upto!!! if you are lucky it may last that long but if not OOOPS!. so actually your dvd's are a safer place than a flash drive.
I have 8TB of original unedited video footage, all on external HDD, kept in a safe, most of the video is of clients weddings, and other special events, also hundreds of Mini-dv tapes, do you think that I would risk the safety of the backups. I use that because they are the most reliable way to store data.
you have asked the question. You have an answer. If you choose to use a flash drive and then in a few months decide to look at the data and its gone, it will be gone you will not be able to recover it, how ever you try.
Maybe you dont like the answer, but with many years experience in video (its my profession) its an honest answer
