can i send my ps3 without its hard drive to Sony?
ps3 07 model got the YLoD and Sony told me to send it to them and i was wondering can i keep my hard drive just in case they give me a new ps3 i really don't want to have to go though those games all over again most of wish i dont have
Yes, if you send the PS3 to them without a hard drive, then they will send you back a refurbished PS3 also with no hard drive, so you will have to put yours in it.
The problem is that the hard drive will still need to be reformatted before the new PS3 can be used, so you will lose your game saves on the current drive (there is no way to transfer or backup this data, with either a PS3 connection or a PC one, I tried). Purchased/downloaded content can be re-downloaded from the store for no additional fee, as long as you sign in with the same PSN account.
If your current hard drive is of an upgraded size, then I would keep it and send the PS3 in without it. If it's the original size drive, then you could go either way, they will send back a refurbished PS3 with the same size drive if you do leave it installed.
