Which Extension Tube is Best for Closeups W/ 80mm Planar on a manual Hasselblad? (Hassie Experts Only, Please)
I am a high school photo teacher. We have a Hassie manual focus with one lens: a 80mm 2.8 Planar, and the closest we can get is about 4 feet, which gives us head and chest, but we would like to be able to get close enough to do head shots. Unfortunately we don't have the funds for a new lens, the camera and lens we have were gifts. We do have the funds for an extension tube for the 80mm lens, but I have never purchased this kind of item in my years of photo and need to know which one is the BEST tube to add to be able to do head shots with this 80mm? We are not looking to shoot super-macro closeups of butterflies or anything like that, just need to get close enough for head shots.
Hassie experts only. Please do not suggest cropping the 80mm shots.
Since you are on a budget I wouldn't suggest any of the Hasselblad teleconverters as you will spend at least $500 or more. I would suggest a 2x Rokunar HB or HBF teleconverter. I have used this with the 80mm planar and have received wonderful results, in fact I still have it. The only bad thing about this converter is that you lose a stop but it is still a lot cheaper than a Hasselblad converter or a 150mm lens. I would suggest looking through KEH.com selection of converters. Although I have never used the Komura converters from what I understand they soften the image a bit more than the Rokunar. On a side note if you do buy a converter make sure you have a dime or a penny handy, sometimes when dismounting the lens from the converter the shutter releases and you will have to wind the lens with a coin before mounting the 80 back on the body. Otherwise if you mount an uncocked lens to the body you will end up with the lens stuck to the body.
By the way the 2x converter should cost you no more than $50-$100.
