A second hand DSLR for a non-DSLR lover?
Any thoughts on a second hand DSLR? I shoot street in rough neighbour hoods so getting robbed is a constant problem, hence I don't want to spend out too much. I use prime lenses nearly all the time. I usually shoot fast and wide.
I'm going back to a DSLR after giving up due to their bulk, trying out film rangefinders, digital compacts and other things. But I just need a DSLR's versatility. I sold all my SLR gear less than a year ago so legacy gear is not an issue.
I'd like live view with a flip out LCD as I've found this a boon on compacts as I'm often shooting from obtuse angles in awkward spots, though it's not quite a deal breaker.
Any thoughts much appreciated.
Well, if you're worried about getting mugged, then I would recommend a D40 or D40X with a 18-55mm lens. Fairly inexpensive, decent pricing (used), and will take perfectly good photos. It is also smaller (in this configuration) than most other Nikons or Canons, so you can not be so "overt" in your photo taking. Overall cost: around $500 or so at most.
If you require the flip out LCD, then your best bet is a D5000 from Nikon with the same lens. $700 or so on sale, with tax.
Lens choices are below for ANY Nikon camera!
