I would like to know how to sew the petals on so that they won't flop forwards ad backwards when i put the hood up. Also what materials do i need to use? Is there a type of washable foam i can place in it to make them strong? Please ask any questions you like!
Thanks in advance!
If you go to the fabric store they will have different weights of interfacing. Look for a heavy weight, stiff fusible interfacing such as pellon and fuse it with an iron to the wrong sides of the petals. Be sure that interfacing covers the entire petal right into the seam allowances. When sewing the petals make the bottom part (the part sewn into the seam) longer than the usual 5/8 of an inch and leave the two halves unsewn below the sewing line. Sew the petals in the place where they belong. When the seam is pressed open, press half the petal to one side of the seam and the other side to the other. then sew a small rectangle on the outside of the hood on each side of the pressed seam. This little bit of top stitching should help the petals to stand up.
You can use craft foam, like the kind they sell at Michael's in the kids craft section.. While you will be able to wash the item, you won't be able to toss it in the dryer as the heat can melt some craft foams. Cut the foam slightly smaller on the sides and it needs to be just a little beyond the seam line in the bottom. You need to sew through the foam, if it isn't caught by stitching the petals will be floppier from the weight of the foam.
These techniques are used to make cat and rabbit ear hoodies. it should work for the petals. You need to stitch the base of the petals down, this will help hold them up. You can also try something called "rigilene boning" light weight plastic strips used for making bustiers and evening dresses. Look for bones in a casing and stitch the casing to the insides of the petals, this will make them very stiff, maybe too stiff.
You might want to try a few test petals in scrap fabric before sewing the good fabric. Experiment with a couple weights of interfacing, with and without foam, etc. Don't be afraid to experiment! When you begin to sew the test petals you might find a method on your own that will work even better.
Good luck and happy sewing!
