2 Questions about camera & comments?
1) I have a Nikon I play around with, trying to learn the " Art & Craft" of photography, and have a option to add a slightly better lens, something like a 18-105 VR, and maybe $200-$350USD more to spend on "other stuff", and I would like to know what areas I might best invest. Any idea's?
:/../: BTW: addedd a UV filter, hood, hand strap & LCD Cover. No near by " photography class " or "local group" type options available at present.
:/:/ MBS: shoot scenery & family so far, yet attempting more, so tripod, remote, better flash &cheap slave unit, etc or ...well, thats why I am asking.
#2) Have you ever wondered why the more ya learn about photography, the harder it gets to take a "really great" photo?
Sorry, I will re-sell the kit lens for best offer. And I plan on getting book(s) on technique, lighting etc.
Although the 18-105mm lens is a fine piece of glass, If you have the usual 18-55mm the 18-105mm is a bit of overlap. Its always best to avoid duplicating focal lengths whenever possible. If you're seriously into landscapes you might want to consider the AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 10-24mm f3.5-4.5G ED. A little overlap with the 18-55mm but the 10mm end will certainly give you some wide, sweeping landscapes. If you're interested in low-light, non-flash photography the AF-S Nikkor 50mm f1.4G would be a good choice.
A tripod is highly recommended. In fact, I consider a tripod mandatory for good landscapes. You'll also want to get a circular polarizer. Its used to darken a blue sky and make those white, puffy clouds really "pop". Its also used to remove/reduce glare/reflections from glass, water, snow, sand and painted metal - but not polished metal. If you were to choose the 10-24mm lens you'll probably want to buy your circular polarizer in a "thin" or "slim" mount to reduce any possibility of vignetting.
It does often seem as though the more you learn about photography the more difficult it becomes to make a really good picture. I believe this is because as we learn more we become more critical of the pictures we make. However, at some point we have to realize that while perfection is a goal its not really an attainable one. Its sure fun to try though.
