Looking for a telephoto lens - would love opinions on the one I found (or advise for better)?
I have some oportunities to shoot some more football stuff this fall (American not soccer) and am looking for a serious telephoto lens. Budget is under $1000
Here is what I found
Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG APO OS (Optical Stabilizer) HSM AutoFocus Telephoto Zoom Lens for Nikon AF Cameras
http://www.adorama.com/SG150500NK.html
Has anyone played with this one?
Any opinions?
Can I get something better for my money?
I have a Nikon, 2 bodies actually, and one of them is d40 so I need a lens that will work with that.
I personally would go for the:
Sigma 100-300mm f/4 EX DG IF HSM AutoFocus Telephoto Zoom Lens for Nikon AF-D Cameras
The f4.0 vs f6.3 at maximum zoom is the most important factor in this decision.
The extra 2 stops of shutter speed will pay huge dividends in trying to stop the action of football.
And since you can follow the action up and down the sidelines the 500mm is a little bit of overkill.
The image quality at ISO1600 on the D40 isn't phenomenal so a faster lens is a must.
If you ever find a need to reach out and touch someone, a teleconverter can push you out there
