Excellent Quality Camera Needed For Mainly Taking Pictures At Concerts/Gigs. Help?
I'm looking for a compact point and shoot digital camera that lets me take excellent quality pictures in low lighting conditions. Specifically gigs and concerts.
Also for taking these pictures I want the images to be as sharp as possible as obviously the target of my pictures will be moving significantly.
Not really bothered about zoom or anything like that.
I would prefer a li-ion battery camera but I'm not really fussed too much abouth that either.
I just need some recommendations! If anyone could post links to test shots of any recommendations that would be really helpful!
My budget is anything under £400 (about $850).
Thanks!!!
Assuming you cannot use flash photography and the lighting conditions will be dim like those in most clubs (w/ some lighting for the band) then you will want a Digital or Film SLR for this and here's why...
Most all point and shoots will only have their largest aperture rating of f/2.8. For a concert in low lighting (like a night club etc.) An aperture of f/2.8 is the absolute minimum aperture you can start with and if you do, then you will HAVE to push your ISO to 800 or up because you just won't allow enough light to enter the camera to get a good shot at a fast enough speed. i.e. your pictures will either be too dark (not enough light coming in), blurry (shutter speed will have to be slow to allow more light in), or too noisy (from increasing your ISO) if you use an f/2.8 lens.
I would recommend at least an f/1.8 if not an f/1.4 aperture setting. NONE of the point and shoot cameras offer this.
Additionally almost all point and shoots will focus significantly slower in low light like that of a night club/bar or concert locale.
This is why you'll want an SLR. The lens you want to get with it will be a 50mm f/1.8 or 50mm f/1.4 (depending on how close you are to the stage).
It does sound like you're either part of the band or will have access to a decent location to take pictures of the band like near the front rows (within 10-15ft or 3-5M). A 50mm lens would be fine and you could easily get a good shot from someone's thighs up to their head if you're shooting within 10ft./~3M If you are looking at Nikon lenses then these lenses would cost $100 (f/1.8 lens) or $300 (f/1.4 lens) and a D50 body would be ~$400-500 which can put it will under your £400/$850 total.
It will be a little bigger than a tiny point and shoot but at least you'll be able to get the picture.
HTH.
