Ion Replacement Battery

Can I substitute a L-ion battery w/ 3.7V & 1000 mAh with one w/ 3.7V and a higher mAh (1400)? What will happen?
I am trying to replace a digital camera battery that has 3.7V and 1000mAH. I see other batteries online listed as replacement for the battery, but they have the mAh listed as various amounts like 1300, 1400, 1600, and some higher. Would these last longer in my digital camera than the one with 1000mAh did? Do they hold more or a charge? Are they safe? I would hate to ruin my digital camera.
The mAh rating is equivalent to how big of a "gas tank" the battery has. mAh stands for milliamp hour and represents how long a battery would last. Thus, a higher mAh rating means the battery has a bigger gas tank and would last longer.
So, yes, the battery will last longer and hold more of a charge. As long as the battery is well-made, it should be safe to use. As long as the voltage is correct, it'll be safe for your camera (and last longer).
The only danger from any battery is if the internal workings are of poor design, resulting in a short circuit. This can cause a battery to overheat and catch fire or even explode. Luckily, this is extremely rare. Sony did have to recall a bunch of batteries a few years ago, but other than that Lithium-Ion batteries have a pretty good track record.
