Canon EOS 500D, Nikon D5000 Double Kit DSLR OR Nikon D90 Kit DSLR?
Which one is the best??? Any suggestions...
The Nikon D90 and the D5000 take pictures of the same quality because they share much of the internal components between them. The main difference between the two is that the D90 has the auto focus motor built into the body whereas the D5000 does not, and of course the D90 has higher component specs and features. The best prices I could find for the D90 are from camerakings.com. $865.00 for the body only, $974.00 with Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX ED II Lens, $1,109.00 with Nikon 18-105mm VR Lens, and $1,137.00 with Nikon 18-55mm AF-S DX ED II & 55-200mm f/4.0-5.6 AF-S DX Lens.
The best prices I could find for the D5000 are from camerakings.com. $619.00 for the body only, $719.00 with Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX ED II Lens, $909.00 with Nikon with Nikon 18-55mm AF-S DX ED II & 55-200mm f/4.0-5.6 AF-S DX Lens and $1,393.00 with Nikon 18-105mm VR & 70-300 VR AF-S Lens.
Another option is to purchase the D90 body ($865.00) or D5000 body ($619.00) and purchase a third party lens like the Tamron Zoom Super Wide Angle 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di-II LD Aspherical (IF) Macro Lens for $254.00 with $60.00 mail in rebate (one of the best deals available right now, unfortunately it does not have (VC) vibration compensation, but for the price you will not find a better deal on a lens like this) or a Tamron 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di-II VC LD Asph. AF Macro Lens for $549.99 with a $70.00 mail in rebate (this lens has VC and longer focal length but cost more than double the 18-200mm lens). The mail in rebates for the Tamron lenses are good until the end of December. All the prices I quoted include free shipping from camerakings.com.
One of the main reasons I prefer the Nikon's over the Canon's and Sony's is that they have a separate auto focus assist lamp built into the body (on all models) whereas the Canon and Sony use their flash to perform this function. In certain situations, using the flash as a AF assist lamp can interfere with your shot. I am surprised that Canon and Sony still use flash for AF assist on their lower end models because on their upper end models they have separate AF assist lamps.
If you decide to use older 35mm film lenses, the thing you have to remember about using older 35mm lenses with the D90 or D5000 is that you have to multiply the focal lenght by 1.5 because the sensor is smaller than the original 35mm film. What this means is that your 18-200mm lens on the D90 would become a 27-300mm lens. Check out second link for a compatibility chart of Nikon lenses and bodies.
You can't really go wrong with either camera because they have the same picture quality. I know it is a hard choice but if you can afford it I'd go with the D90 instead. Take a look at the links below for more information and where to purchase.
