Kit Canon Nikon

Overall is a Canon EOS 550D better than a Nikon D80?
I currently have a Nikon D80 and i don't really know much about Canon. I was contemplating on upgrading my equipment and possibly changing over to Canon but i'm still thinking abut it. But in general, is it worth selling my current kit and changing to the Canon 550D?
Is there anything majorly wrong with Nikon, that you want to start all over? Very few people jump the systems, once they have some equipment on hands. You'd have to get EVERYTHING anew if you go to Canon. While if you're upgrading to another Nikon, you'd just need a new body, and you're keeping the rest of your kit: lenses, flashes, cords, remotes, etc.
As to D80 vs 550D - this is not a very level comparison. D80 is a semi-professional level camera, but a somewhat old model. 550D is spanking new, but is an entry level camera. If you're hunting more megapixels - you're following a wrong path, they won't help you much. Other than that, D80 has more buttons and controls that don't require menu trips, a beautiful and informative LCD on top that saves you the usage of the main power-hungry screen to more or less just reviewing the photographs, and doing major adjustments in menus (because most things you can adjust by pressing buttons and looking at top screen), and so on.
If I were in your spot - I would never do such a trade (and I do own a D80), again for two reasons I stated above:
1. I wouldn't jump the train from Nikon to Canon.
2. I would not downgrade my equipment from semi-pro to entry level.
Your mileage may vary though. I love analogies, so here's one for you: Think about it this way - would you trade a slightly used but still in good running condition older model of Lexus for a brand new just out of the factory Toyota?
LEM.
