Lens Cap Dslr

Why shouldn't you press the shutter of a DSLR camera without a lens or cap on?
Is it dust? Or will it break the mirrors? Does it damage your camera? I just got a new camera today and I don't have a lens yet so I wanted to test it out and took a few pictures with no lens or cap over the mirrors to make sure everything works, some with flash, some without. I took maybe 10-15 total.
Did I break it?!
I've been saving for a really long time.. This camera was really expensive ![]()
I really hope I didn't screw it up on my first day.
Thanks (-:
Yes, I knew that it wouldn't take a picture, I saw the playback of my many colorful blurs. I was just wanting to see that everything works. I've wanted a DSLR for so long now, and this is my first.. So it was just curiosity as well. [:
It's a Canon Rebel XSi
Brand new
Overall, it is fine. The problem is that you could have hit the mirror when it flipped down and up, breaking it, since nothing was protecting it. Also, it lets dust get on the sensor, so you have to get it cleaned sooner. Although, you didn't do enough to do any appreciable damage. Just keep in mind overall that what you did was pointless.
Als, you realize a picture won't come out, right? it will just be a gray or white blotch, since the lens is what resolves the image. This is like testing a car out without wheels. You can start it and put it in drive, but you aren't going to go anywhere unless you get the complete setup.
