Why does a telephoto lens have front threads on it? confused beginner?
Okay, i have a panasonic dmc fz18 and its pretty basic in the middle of slr, and p&s camera. The good thing is that you can (with a lens adaptor) use different lenses, filters ect. So my lens adaptor fits the camera and has 58mm thread. I'm trying to purchase a telephoto lens and am confused because i'm finding the lenses online say things like '58mm 2.0x TELE Telephoto LENS 67mm Front Thread". So does that mean the 58mm will fit my adaptor? Why does it say 67mm front thread? why would it have a front thread (for filters?)? I just want to make sure i buy something that will fit. Thanks for being patient with me...im learning!
In the example you gave, the first measurement (58mm 2.0X TELE Telephoto LENS) means that the lens will fit your adapter. The second measurement (67mm Front Thread) means that if you want to use a filter with that lens attached, you need to buy 67mm filters.
The filters are called bayonet filters or circular filters depending on who's talking. They are round, and screw on to the side that doesn't fit on to your 58mm lens adapter.
Just remember the first number is the part that connects to your adapter and the second number is for any new filters you want to put on.
There are step down and step up rings so you can standardize on one size. The downside is the larger the filter, the more expensive it is. The upside is you only have to buy one for all your lenses. Step up rings are better to avoid vignetting (darkening of the sides of the picture because the projected image is too small for the sensor). Step down rings essentially save you money on which filters you want to buy.
All that said, if you don't intend on using optical filters like a polarizer (highly recommended), then don't worry about the second set of numbers.
