Lens Hood Shade

How important is a lens hood?
Or at least it's not listed as one of the accessories. How important is it to have a good lens hood? Is it worth spending a lot of money on one or will a cheap one work. Cause I cant get something like this:

and I imagine that they would serve me well.
The Canon Gl2 that I ordered didn't come with a lens hood.
A lens hood is a valuable accessory for a camera. Its' prime purpose is to avoid a bright light source (such as the sun) from causing internal reflections in the lens (of the sun) which might cause problems with reduced contrast and strange shapes in the image. With the lens coatings of today it is not quite as necessary as it used to be before lens coatings were commonly used. If the sun's image will appear in the picture some undesired reflections may still occur. Another function of the hood is that of protecting the lens from accidental bumps. The depth of the hood will depend upon the focal length of the lens. Of it is too deep (as with a wide angle lens) the corners of the image may be cut off. This can be a real problem with a zoom lens used at it's shortest (widest angle). Like any other tool it has a place in the art of photography and must be used properly.
