What can (35mm F1.8) prime Nikon lens do best?
What can (35mm F1.8) prime Nikon lens do when 18-55mm kit lens can't ?
I tried my Nikon D60.
I took some shoots with 35mm f1.8 indoor with low light, then i took some shoot same condition with kit lens 18-55mm (set was 35mm f5) but i put the ISO highest.
The result almost the same.
Is my prime lens (35mm f1.8) good for portraits ?
I read 50mm is good for portraits, but my lens is 35mm DX lens, do you think will equal with 50mm that people talk ?
Thanks
If you were doing both shots at f/5, you weren't using the 35mm lens to it's full potential. Here's the deal - it involves some maths but bear with me - had you set the camera to A (aperture priority mode) and used f/1.8 instead of f/5, you would have gained 3 stops. Three stops means that you could have lowered the ISO from 800 to 100. Or from 1600 to 200. Had you done that, there would have been no digital noise which means better image quality. So the 35mm really is much better in low light situations, but only if you use it correctly.
Another thing you can do at f/1.8 that you can't at f/5, is isolate your subject with selective focus. When you focus on something nearby the entire rest of the picture fades into a blurry background. At f/5, the background remains relatively sharp. This opens up several creative possibilities.
As for close up portraits, a 50mm lens provides a more pleasant field of view. With the 35mm lens you have to get very close to your subject to fill the frame with head shots and this close proximity results in distortion. On the other hand, head shots is almost the only thing that a 50mm lens is good for on a D60. Your 35mm lens is perfect for full body portraits, general indoor photography, and night time street photography.
