Canon dSLR macro lens dilemma?
I am in the market for a macro lens for my canon xsi. The main use for this macro lens would be for product shots, mainly fashion jewelry/accessories; to put up on a website. I was wondering if the ef 50mm f/2.5 or the ef 100mm f/2.8 would be better for this. I am currently using the lens that came with the camera, and am looking for a lens that can capture more detail/color.
I would only be taking photos of actual products, such as necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings, tiaras, etc. They will be in a light box that is approximately 24" x 24."
The 50mm macro is not full size macro without an adaptor (although with the crop factor of the XSi this becomes less of an issue) and also requires a fairly close working distance, which may affect your lighting options. It is a good solid lens but the AFD motor belongs in the 80s, which is when this lens was designed. Would be pretty damn good for product shots (where you would use a tripod, mcro adjust plate and MF anyway) not fast enough focusing in a catwalk or portrait situation.
It is a good price but its an old design showing its age. It would fit a full frame camera too in the future if you go that way.
Canons EF-s 60mm f2.8 is a far better bet, USM motor, faster internal focusing and a more practical all- rounder for APS-C format cameras. This would make a great product lens, with full 1:1 reproduction and a 1.6x crop, but would also double as a fantastic portrait lens too.
It's more money but worth the extra. It will not fit a full frame camera though.
The Canon 100mm would give you even more working distance, but perhaps an overly flat perspective for jewellery shots. Also a bit long for portraiture, and lets face it, more expensive. Almost double the price of the 50mm f2.5. It really is a lens that is best for full frame users.
I use the Sigma macro 70mm DG f2.8 EX, as it outperforms just about every other macro lens in terms of resolution, vignetting, distorition. It is also a good portrait lens on APS_C cameras but can also work well on a full frame camera.
It is not internal focusing, and the focus can be slow unless you decide on your range and use the limiter, but optically it's pretty much peerless.
